London's pioneering lingerie sewing academy

In addition, we offer various sewing classes and sewing workshops for individuals and brands interested in producing their own lingerie instead of sourcing abroad. Our primary mission is to support the growing movement of bringing fashion manufacturing back to the UK. However, we recognize that such a shift requires a skilled labor force. To address this, we have introduced various sewing courses ,sewing workshops, and sewing tuition to train sewing machinists in line with this trend.

Why did we start LAFT

Globalization has played a significant role, with China's entry into the World Trade Organization in 2001 leading to its dominance in global supply chains. China has become a manufacturing powerhouse, accounting for nearly 30% of global manufacturing. The allure of lower labor costs, a robust business ecosystem, relaxed regulatory compliance, and low taxes prompted brands and manufacturers to shift their production or fully manufacture their products in China and other countries. These movements have resulted in higher Minimum Order Quantities (MOQs), increased costs, longer lead times, and decreased product quality. As a consequence, small and startup brands struggle to meet these higher MOQs, hindering their ability to invest and launch their brands.

Brexit has introduced social, economic, and environmental challenges in the UK. Post-Brexit, the availability of seasonal and zero-contract labor from the EU has diminished, as EU citizens now require work permits to work in the UK. Companies must navigate onerous UK immigration laws and offer minimum annual salaries to employ EU citizens. Additional complications arise from the introduction of import duties and VAT on products purchased outside the UK.

The COVID-19 pandemic further exposed the vulnerability of heavily reliant overseas supply chains. Shutdowns and halted production led to significant disruptions and increased costs associated with importing goods, especially from China. The pandemic has prompted businesses to re-evaluate the long-term sustainability of global ecosystems, given the heightened risks and uncertainties.

However, even if we were to bring manufacturing back to the UK, the fashion industry faces a shortage of sewing machinists and technicians trained in operating industrial sewing machines and textile equipment. These skills, passed down through generations, are slowly disappearing from our communities. Currently, only a few universities in the UK offer Fashion Contour courses with industrial machines. This means individuals interested in this field must spend significant amounts on specialized training. While some non-university contour courses are available, they mainly focus on domestic sewing machines designed for personal use.

Research indicates that almost two-thirds of UK businesses intend to bring their supply chains back to the UK. However, without a trained labor market, achieving this goal becomes challenging. We must train the new generation and preserve these valuable skills. Therefore, our workshops aim to contribute to the UK economy, create opportunities, and support our communities.

To facilitate the trend of bringing textile and fashion manufacturing back to the UK, individuals must be trained in using industrial sewing machines. These machines are specifically designed for business and factory-quality production, delivering high-performance and strong stitches. They offer increased production speed with powerful motors, and technological advancements have further enhanced efficiency in factories. At LAFT, we have introduced sewing classes that incorporate technology equipment, Specialty Feet Attachments, and devices used for professional lingerie and other garments making. Our aim is to make the process of garment making faster, easier, and more enjoyable. By teaching modern industrial sewing methods and techniques, we aspire to train a new generation of sewing machinists and support the resurgence of manufacturing in the UK.

We welcome sewing machinists with diverse experiences and backgrounds to join our team and contribute to the skill development of the next generation.
